Fuel Your Creativity with Shannon Vannatter

The ability to make a one of a kind, personalized gift for someone is  so special. Here are some of the treasures Shannon Vannatter has created.

I’ve always been crafty. Sometimes, I see things at craft shows or in stores, inspect them and think, I can make that. One time I saw a sign at a craft show that said, “We know you can make it, but will you?”

When I first saw a cloth covered bulletin board in a magazine, I fell in love with the concept. I make them as gifts and come up with a theme to match the person I’m making the board for.

One of our church members loves pirates. I found pirate fabric, skull and anchor buttons, black lace, and white and black polka dot ribbon to complete the project.

When my son was small, I made a Bob the Builder bulletin board to match his room. Instead of ribbon and lace, I used work boot shoe laces paired with truck and tractor buttons. I wish I’d taken a picture, but it’s in the process of being transformed into a camouflage board for him. Not finished yet though, so no picture.

My son has a girl cousin who loves horses and hot pink. He helped me pick fabric and embellishments. We found a package of horse, saddle, and cowboy hat and boot buttons. I mixed those with hot pink bottle caps, polka dotted buttons and ribbon, and lace.

My husband loves coffee. His board isn’t made yet, but I have brown fabric with coffee cups all over it and coffee buttons. He’ll want it manly, so I’ll use shoelaces with it.

My sister-in-law picked her own blue French Country toile. I added delicate lace and Victorian buttons.

One of these days, I’ll make one for me. My board will have a seashell theme with pastel buttons to match my office. I’ve actually seen the buttons I want, but haven’t found the perfect fabric yet.

I make the boards in large or small size. The small ones can be magnetic and hung on the refrigerator. They’re useful and decorative at the same time and make great birthday, wedding, appreciation, and baby gifts. And the person I give them to knows I put a lot of thought and planning into their board.
