Fuel Your Creativity with Shannon Vannatter

The ability to make a one of a kind, personalized gift for someone is  so special. Here are some of the treasures Shannon Vannatter has created.

I’ve always been crafty. Sometimes, I see things at craft shows or in stores, inspect them and think, I can make that. One time I saw a sign at a craft show that said, “We know you can make it, but will you?”

When I first saw a cloth covered bulletin board in a magazine, I fell in love with the concept. I make them as gifts and come up with a theme to match the person I’m making the board for.

One of our church members loves pirates. I found pirate fabric, skull and anchor buttons, black lace, and white and black polka dot ribbon to complete the project.

When my son was small, I made a Bob the Builder bulletin board to match his room. Instead of ribbon and lace, I used work boot shoe laces paired with truck and tractor buttons. I wish I’d taken a picture, but it’s in the process of being transformed into a camouflage board for him. Not finished yet though, so no picture.

Horse bulletin board

My son has a girl cousin who loves horses and hot pink. He helped me pick fabric and embellishments. We found a package of horse, saddle, and cowboy hat and boot buttons. I mixed those with hot pink bottle caps, polka dotted buttons and ribbon, and lace.

My husband loves coffee. His board isn’t made yet, but I have brown fabric with coffee cups all over it and coffee buttons. He’ll want it manly, so I’ll use shoelaces with it.

My sister-in-law picked her own blue French Country toile. I added delicate lace and Victorian buttons.Country French bulletin board

One of these days, I’ll make one for me. My board will have a seashell theme with pastel buttons to match my office. I’ve actually seen the buttons I want, but haven’t found the perfect fabric yet.

I make the boards in large or small size. The small ones can be magnetic and hung on the refrigerator. They’re useful and decorative at the same time and make great birthday, wedding, appreciation, and baby gifts. And the person I give them to knows I put a lot of thought and planning into their board.

  1. Very pretty! Do you use corkboard or something else for the base?

I use foam poster board and quilt batting. The ribbon and fabric are anchored with brads through the board. The board is light weight that way and I cover all the ugly on the back with fabric. No sewing, just hot glue and I leave a ribbon loop on the top corners for hanging unless I use magnets.

I forgot to say, you don’t use push pins. Pictures or lists or whatever slip under the ribbons to stay in place.

  4. Hi Shannon. Would love to win another of your books. Love these cowboys. My cowboy has been gone to the LORD for 16 years now. Sure miss him. Sounds like very suspenseful. I believe he will decide to stay this time. Hope so. Thanks for the book give-away.

      Hey Maxie,
You just made me realize I sent Joselyn the wrong book info. That’s what I get for having so many Rodeo titles. Even I get confused. Rodeo Queen doesn’t come out until November. This giveaway is for Rodeo Regrets. I’ll send Joselyn the right info. Sorry I confused everyone.
I’m glad you know the Lord, Maxie and you’ll get to see your cowboy again someday.

What a great idea! I have seen those boards before, but have not attempted to make one. We are redoing my two of our children’s rooms and making those boards could be a great addition to them. I might put my 13 year old daughter in charge of that. She loves doing crafty things. Would love to win your book.

      Hey Brittany,
They’re really fun to make. I’ve even used very small ones (a sixth of a poster board) with magnets on the back as a project for VBS. I’m the craft lady every year. I get camo fabric for the boys and flowery for the girls. They enjoy it.

  6. What a thoughtful, useful gift. I have to have a bulletin board near me to tack up all my “stuff.” This would be great to just slip everything under the ribbons. Thanks for sharing your creative energy with us. Best wishes on your new release!

J.Q, I think most people call them memory boards. You can also cover the back with poster board, if you only have a small piece of fabric you want to use or if the fabric you choose is pricey. Or use coordinating fabric on the back.

I love this idea. My daughter would love the horse one. I bought one for her when she was a baby for her room in pink. It had a little shelf on the bottom. I loved putting pictures and such then little trinkets given to her as a baby on the shelf. Couldn’t be anything heavy but small things. Love this!!

Okay Melissa, now you’ve given me an idea. I’ve never seen one with a shelf at the bottom. Will have to ponder on that. Maybe my husband can help me figure out how to do that. Would probably take something sturdier than foam poster board.
